US President Donald Trump on Saturday praised Pakistan while responding to questions from reporters about the ongoing military escalation between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

When asked about a potential US role in addressing the rapidly intensifying confrontation between Islamabad and Kabul, Trump stressed his personal rapport with Pakistan’s leadership.

“I would (intervene). But I get along with Pakistan very, very well. They have a great Prime Minister, a great General. They have a great leader, two of the people that I really respect a lot. Pakistan is doing terrifically well," Trump said.

CONFLICT BETWEEN PAKISTAN AND AFGHANISTAN INTENSIFIES

Trump’s remarks came as tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan sharply escalated, with both sides accusing each other of carrying out retaliatory strikes, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

Islamabad declared an “open war" after conducting airstrikes in parts of Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia, further intensifying hostilities between the neighbouring countries.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar alleged that Afghanistan had carried out drone attacks targeting Abbottabad, Swabi and Nowshera, adding that anti-drone systems intercepted the drones and that no loss of life was reported, as cited by Tolo News.

Pakistan also announced a nationwide ban on commercial and privately operated drones following the escalation.

The Ministry of Interior issued a notification enforcing the prohibition amid rising border tensions, Geo News reported.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, said its air force launched strikes against several military targets inside Pakistan.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defence stated that the operation targeted important military centres, including a military camp near Faizabad in Islamabad, a headquarters in Nowshera, the military township of Jamrud and Abbottabad.

Afghan officials said the strikes were conducted in retaliation for what they described as Pakistani “aerial incursions."
