US-Iran Peace Talks: Hopes of a potential diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran in Islamabad were dented after US President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled a planned visit by special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, casting a shadow over ongoing peace efforts.
Trump called off the visit of Witkoff and Kushner, citing “too much travel" and confusion within Iran’s leadership. In his post on Truth Social, Trump said one of the main reasons for his decision was the tremendous confusion in the Iranian leadership. “Too much time wasted on travelling, too much work! Besides which, there is tremendous infighting and confusion within their “leadership," he said.
“Nobody knows who is in charge, including them. Also, we have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call," Trump further said, keeping the doors open for diplomacy.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who had been in Islamabad engaging with Pakistan’s leadership, also left the country after what he described as “very fruitful" discussions. However, no direct talks with US officials took place.
Araghchi arrived in Islamabad on Friday, where Pakistan hosted direct US-Iran talks earlier this month. But his spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, denied that a direct meeting with the US was planned.
Pakistan, which positioned itself as a mediator, had locked down parts of Islamabad in anticipation of high-stakes negotiations. However, restrictions began easing after Iran’s delegation departed and the US confirmed it would not be sending its representatives.
Despite the setback, Trump indicated that cancelling the visit does not necessarily signal a resumption of war with Iran, saying the option has not been considered yet.
The stalled talks marked a sharp turn from earlier momentum. Senior US and Iranian officials had held lengthy discussions earlier this month, and a ceasefire extension had kept diplomatic channels open. Plans for a follow-up round in Islamabad had raised expectations of a possible deal.
However, key sticking points remain, including Iran’s refusal to engage in direct talks while a US naval blockade around its ports continues. Meanwhile, tensions remain high, with the Strait of Hormuz – a critical global energy route – still effectively blocked, adding urgency to diplomatic efforts.
What began as a promising opening for dialogue has now faltered, leaving the future of US-Iran engagement uncertain and raising fresh concerns over stability in the region.
