West Asia Conflict: An Iranian missile strike on the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia damaged an American E-3 Sentry, an airborne warning and control aircraft that is critical in managing battlespace and tracking drones, missiles and aircraft, and aerial refueling tankers, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

At least 12 American personnel were injured in the strike, with two in serious condition. The attack reportedly involved a missile strike on the base along with multiple drones.

The E-3 Sentry AWACS isn’t just a regular plane—it’s a tricked-out Boeing 707 that works as an airborne command center. It can spot targets, identify what’s out there, and keep tabs on battlefield chaos for up to 250 miles all around.

Retired US Air Force Colonel John Venable told the news outlet that the damage could significantly affect Washington’s capabilities in the region.

“It’s a huge deal," he said, adding “It hurts the US’s ability to see what’s happening in the Gulf and maintain situational awareness."

Prince Sultan Air Base is a key hub for US air operations in the Middle East, supporting missions ranging from intelligence gathering to aerial refueling and strike coordination. Aircraft such as the E-3 Sentry play a crucial role in airborne surveillance and command, while tanker planes are essential for extending the operational reach of combat aircraft in the region.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement saying that 303 Americans had been injured since the US and Israel began bombing Iran. CENTCOM spokesperson Navy Captain Tim Hawkins said that the vast majority of these injuries have been minor, and 273 troops have returned to duty.

Meanwhile, the United States has stepped up its military presence in the Middle East, with 3,500 marines and sailors arriving in the region as Washington continues to expand its options in the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The deployment was confirmed by CENTCOM, which said the forces arrived on March 27 aboard the USS Tripoli (LHA 7).

The latest deployment comes amid reports that the Pentagon is considering sending up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the region in order to give President Donald Trump a wider range of military options beyond diplomacy.
