US hedge fund billionaire Ray Dalio has cautioned that the escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran should not be viewed in isolation, but as part of a broader global trend.
In a series of posts on X, Dalio said the current situation reflects interconnected conflicts rather than a single war, warning that the world could already be “in the early stages of a world war that isn’t going to end anytime soon."
The billionaire investor highlighted several ongoing conflicts, including those spanning Russia, Ukraine, Europe and the US; Israel and its regional theatres involving Gaza, Lebanon and Syria; and a wider arc covering Yemen, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with links to other countries such as Kuwait, Egypt and Jordan. He argued that these wars are tied together through alliances, economic tensions and geopolitical rivalries involving major powers.
Alliances, Rivalries Driving Multi-Theater Tensions?
“Together, these conflicts make up a very classic world war that is analogous to past “world wars"," he stated.
He also pointed to the importance of global alignments, noting how China and Russia are increasingly aligned, with Russia also maintaining ties with Iran, North Korea and Cuba. On the other side, the US is aligned with Europe, Israel, Japan, Australia and Gulf nations. “These alliances matter a lot in imagining how things will go for the relevant players, so they need to be considered when observing what’s going on and what’s likely to happen," Dalio added.
‘Big Cycle’ Theory Points To Escalation But Uncertainty Remains
He described the US as “the most overextended major power," citing its extensive global military presence, while also warning it may be “the weakest at withstanding pain over a long period of time." He suggested this imbalance could influence how other nations reassess their reliance on US support.
Framing the situation within his “Big Cycle" theory, Dalio outlined a 13-step progression toward large-scale conflict, suggesting the world may already be at a stage where “multi-theater conflicts increasingly happen simultaneously." However, he emphasised uncertainty about the future, adding, “I don’t know what’s going to happen, and I still hope for a peaceful world built on win-win relationships…"
