Popular streaming platform Netflix was sued on Monday by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who accused the firm of spying on children and other consumers by collecting their data without consent.

According to Paxton, Netflix kept its consumers in the dark while actually tracking and selling viewers’ preferences and habits to advertising companies and commercial data brokers, Reuters reported.

He also alleged that the streaming company designs its platforms to be addictive, said the report.

‘Accurate, Distorted Information’

A Netflix spokesperson rejected the allegations, adding that the company would address the matter in the court.

“Respectfully to the great state of Texas and Attorney General Paxton, this lawsuit lacks merit and is based on inaccurate and distorted information," read an official statement.

It emphasised that Netflix operates in accordance with privacy and data protection laws, adding the company takes its members’ privacy seriously.

‘When You Watch Netflix, Netflix Watches You’

According to the Reuters report, Texas alleged Netflix of serving an addictive platform to children and families, keeping them glued to the screen and monetizing the data for profits.

“Netflix’s endgame is simple and lucrative: get children and families glued to the screen, harvest their data while they are stuck there, and then monetize the data for a handsome profit," said the Texas’ complaint filed in a state court in Collin County, near Dallas.

“When you watch Netflix, Netflix watches you," the complaint added.

Paxton said Netflix’s alleged surveillance was in violation to Texas Deceptive Trade Practices, calling on the company to purge data it collected illegally and pay civil fines of up to USD 10,000.
