US President Donald Trump is set to visit China this week for his seventh in-person meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The US President is visiting China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart to attend a three-day summit beginning Wednesday.
The high-stakes summit is expected to cover key global flashpoints, including the US-Israel conflict with Iran, trade tensions, and Taiwan. Here is a list of the high-stakes meetings between Trump and Xi over the years.
2017 Meeting In Florida
The two leaders first met on April 6, 2017, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, only months after Trump entered the White House. US-China relations at the time were strained over trade and Taiwan after Trump accepted a phone call from then-Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, breaking long-standing diplomatic convention. Despite tensions, Trump later said the meeting with the Chinese leader had produced “tremendous progress" in ties between the two countries. However, the meeting was overshadowed by US airstrikes on Syria during Xi’s visit, Al Jazeera reported.
2017 G20 Summit In Germany
Their next interaction came in July 2017 during the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, where discussions centred on North Korea and economic relations. Soon afterward, the Trump administration launched an investigation into alleged Chinese intellectual property theft, setting the stage for the trade war.
2017 Meeting In China
In November 2017, Trump travelled to Beijing for a high-profile state visit featuring meetings at the Forbidden City and the Great Hall of the People. Trump highlighted $250 billion worth of proposed business agreements, although some of the agreements were tentative or covered projects already underway.
2018 G20 Summit In Argentina
Trade tensions escalated sharply in 2018 when Washington imposed tariffs on Chinese goods worth $250 billion, prompting retaliatory duties from Beijing. During a December 2018 dinner meeting at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the two sides agreed to restart negotiations on trade and cyber-related disputes, the report mentioned.
2019 G20 Summit In Japan
At the June 2019 G20 summit in Japan’s Osaka, Trump and Xi agreed to pause additional tariffs and resume trade talks. The discussions later led to the “Phase One" trade agreement, under which China pledged large-scale purchases of American goods. The targets, however, were disrupted during the Covid-19 pandemic.
2025 APEC Summit In South Korea
After a six-year gap, the two leaders met again in October 2025 at the APEC summit in Busan, South Korea, amid an escalating tariff conflict. The US and China announced a one-year trade truce after the talks, with both sides easing some restrictions and agreeing to resume cooperation in selected sectors.
